ThisstudyinvestigatesresearchtrendsontheConvergenceofChineseandWestern Medicine(中西醫,CCWM),byfirstdefining theconceptsandthescopeofthisemergingfield, identifyingdifferenttypesofconvergence, andsuggestingmethodstoevaluatethe process.TheauthorinvestigatestherelationshipofCCWM totheSelf-Streng thening Movement and the doctrine of Zhong tixiyong(中體西用). Lessons that Korean Medicine(KM) canlearn from this approach to help establish relationship between Korean and Western Medicine, areinvestigated. ProponentsofCCWM suggest differentty pesofconvergence such as Zhong zhongcanxi(衷中參西), Zhong xi zhe zhong(中西折衷), and Zhong yi Ke xue hua(中醫科學化), to accom modate the change in the power dynamics between Chinese and Western medicines. The rigiddual medical system inKoreasignificantlyhindersthepotentialforconvergence.Thecurrentsystem is based on the relativistic modelin whichth escopeofpractice for the KM docto randthe Western Medicined octor aremutually exclusive. Philosophically, the convergence of East-West medicine can be support edbypluralism andmonism, whilerelativism seesitas impossible. Aconservative pluralistic modelmight consider Bogu(補救)of Eastern Medicine, whileamore progressive pluralistic modelmigh tbuilda New Medicine which combines the knowledgeand techniques of Eastern and Westernmedicines. An exampleo fmonistic modelisCAM (Complementary and AlternativeMedicine), which aimstoscientifically verifythe efficacy and safety of the Easterntherapeutic practices and integrate them into Westernm edicine. This article proposes that ascommunication and fusion between medicaldisciplines areessential virtuesofcont emporary scholarly development, achange that enablesthe convergence of East-West medicineis needed.
