An Exploratory Study on the Process of Immigrant Youth Counseling : Applying Grounded Theory

본 연구는 중도입국 청소년상담과정에 대하여 알아봄으로써 중도입국 청소년의 문화적 다양성을 고려한 상담과정 및 이에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대하여 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구대상은 중도입국 청소년 상담자 13명으로 심층 면접을 통해 이들의 중도입국청소년상담경험을 알아보았다. 자료분석은 질적연구 방법론 가운데 근거이론 방법(Corbin & Strauss, 2008; Strauss & Corbin, 1998)을 적용하였다. 본 연구결과 중도입국청소년 상담자들의 핵심경험은 ‘동등함으로 본모습을 촉진하는 열린과정’이었고, ‘재미있는 대화로 시작하기’, ‘동등한 관계형성하기’, ‘완급 조절하기’, ‘융통성 있는 상담구조화하기’, ‘이주경험에 함께 머물기’, ‘자발적 동기 촉진하기’, ‘당면과제에 집중하기’, ‘상담의 개념 확장하기’, ‘열린 종결로 변화 지속하기’의 범주가 도출되었다. 본 연구결과 중도입국 청소년 상담과정은 대화시작 단계, 대안모색 단계, 진심공유 단계, 변화촉진 단계, 재개 단계로 나타났으며, 상담과정에 영향을 미치는 요인은 ‘내담자 특성’, ‘이전 상담경험’, ‘가족관계’, ‘상담자 전문성 발달단계’, ‘본국문화 특성의 이해’, ‘다문화상담 훈련기회’, ‘사회적 인식’으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 중도입국 청소년 상담자들의 경험을 토대로 중도입국 청소년 상담의 과정을 제시함으로써 문화적 다양성을 고려한 중도입국 상담과정에 대한 실체이론을 제시하였다는 점에서 학문적 의미를 갖는다.

The purpose of this study is to explore the process of immigrant youth counseling and investigate the counseling process and its influencing factors that contemplate immigrant adolescents’ cultural diversity. Participants of this study were 13 foreign-born immigrant youth counselors, and the researcher investigated experiences of immigrant youth counseling by conducting in-depth interviews of participants. This study applied qualitative research method of grounded theory (Corbin & Strauss, 2008; Strauss & Corbin, 1998) for the analysis of data. The results of this study determined “open process facilitating recovery of real self with equality” as a central experience, and extracted “start with an interesting conversation,” “form an equal relationship,” “control the tempo,” “structuralize flexible counseling system,” “Partake in migration experience,” “promote voluntary motivation,” “focus on present challenges,” “expand counseling concepts,” and “keep up the change with an open end” as categories. Furthermore, the counseling process of immigrant youth counseling appeared to be composed of the following stages: initiate conversation, seek for alternatives, share sincerity, promote change, and restart. Meanwhile, “client’s characteristics,” “previous counseling experience,” “family relationships,” “a level of the development of a counselor’s professionalism,” “understanding of the characteristics of a home culture,” “training chance for multicultural counseling,” and “social recognition” are factors that influence counseling process. This study is academically meaningful in that it made an substantive theory on the process of immigrant youth counseling that contemplates immigrant adolescents’ cultural diversity by presenting the process of foreign-born immigrant youth counseling based on experiences of immigrant youth counseling counselors.
