The Effects of Prosthetic Makeup-based Prosthesis on Psychological Characteristics of the Physically Injured

In modern society, appearance has become more important. Physical impairment isolates the injured from the community and makes it hard for them to fit into society. In addition, it might lead them to make unhealthy decisions. This study attempted to investigate the effects of wearing prosthesis using special prosthetic makeup on the psychological state among those who suffer from congenital or accident-caused physical impairment. For this, a questionnaire survey was conducted among a total of 153 patients with physical impairments. Among them, 10 persons were selected through convenience sampling, and changes in self-efficacy, self-esteem and social phobia control were compared among psychological change factors before and after wearing prosthesis. The results found the following: In self-efficacy, self-regulatory efficacy and confidence revealed a significant difference. In self-esteem, on the contrary, a statistically significant difference was found in self-competence and self-assertion. In other words, self-regulatory efficacy, confidence, self-competence and self-assertion further increased after using prosthetics. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that prosthetic makeup-based prosthesis helps those with physical impairment foster psychological peace and build confidence, ensuring healthy interpersonal relationships and social activities.
