This study attempted to investigate the microbial contamination of barbering and cosmetology tools in beauty salons, barbershops, aesthetic salons, nail salons, and makeup parlors and check their sanitation conditions. For this, a total of 26 barbershops and beauty salons in Cheongju were examined, and 27 different barbering and cosmetology tools were chosen that are commonly used and come into frequent contact with skin. For microbiology testing, a hygiene test was conducted on general germs, Staphylococcus aureus, mold, and coli forms. In terms of microbial analysis, a quick dry rehydratable film media (3M petri film) method was used. The results were stated in mean ± standard deviation. The statistical data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The study results found the following: Staphylococcus aureus, which is usually found in skin disease patients, wasn’t detected in the barbershops and beauty salons in Cheongju, which means that barbering and hairdressing instruments are well managed from a hygiene perspective. In other words, the possibility of skin disease infection through such instruments is very low. In addition, according to a microbial contamination test on barbering and hairdressing instruments, no (or a meaningless number of) bacteria were detected in more than 60% of such instruments. In other words, it appears that most shops were kept clean and sanitary. However, there should be special management guidelines on the instruments in which the number of bacteria detected exceeded a certain level. There should be an objective and systematic hygiene method with legal standards on barbering and hairdressing tools.
