The Reference Documents (Gago munseo) housed in the National Palace Museum of Korea was recently analyzed for dating and identifying its office of production. The documents, bound in a book form, was identified as a collection of manuscript copies of the documents created at the Gungbang of Princess Myeongan, sometime between 1666 (7th year of King Hyeonjong s reign) and 1695 (21st year of King Sukjong s reign). The contents of the document consist of subon — reports and petitions to the Treasury (Naesusa) — which accounts for the majority, and several doseo paeja — instructions sent to local headmen (hojang), clerks (ibang), chief clerks of penal affairs (suhyeongni), and other employees in service. These documents were initially created for the purpose of preliminary review and approval of the drafts of subon, and later collected in copies as case-reference material. The collected subon deal with various occurrences and minutiae that took place while the Gungbang acquired and managed various types of property such as farmlands, marshlands, fisheries, salt furnaces, and slaves.
