두 도형수의 차에 관한 연구

A Research on the Difference of Two Figurate Numbers

본 연구는 고등학교 학생들을 대상으로 수행한 R&E의 결과를 바탕으로 이루어졌고, 본 연구에서 학생들은 통합적 사고 과정을 통하여 도형수의 차에 존재하는 연결 고리를 발견하고, 이를 이용하여 삼각수의 차에 관한 새로운 증명을 제시하였다. 도형수(figurate number)란 정다각형과 그 내부 또는 정다면체와 그 내부에 점들을 일정한 간격으로 배열하였을 때, 그 점들의 개수로 나타나는 수들이다. 정삼각형으로부터 나타나는 도형수를 삼각수(triangular number)라 하고, 정사각형으로부터 나타나는 도형수를 정사각수(square number)라 한다. 본 논문에서는 어떤 자연수가 두 삼각수 또는 두 정사각수의 차로 나타나는지, 나타나면 몇 가지 서로 다른 표현을 갖는지에 대해 연구하였다.

This research is based on the result of R&E which has been studied with high school students. In this research, they discovered the connection between the difference of two figurate numbers through their integrated thinking process and proposed a new proof for the difference of two triangular numbers by using such connection. A figurate number is the number that can be represented by a regular geometrical arrangement of equally spaced points. If the arrangement forms a regular triangle, the number is called a triangular number, and it is called a square number for the case of a square. In this paper, we determine what numbers can be expressed as the difference of two triangular numbers or square numbers, and how many different expressions the numbers have.
