윤치호의 결혼: 한말 근대적 주체와 전근대적 관습/관념의 충돌

Yun’s Weddings: The Politics of Marriage in the Late 19th Century East Asia

이 글은 윤치호의 ‘일기’에 남겨진 결혼 관련 기록에 대한 분석을 통해, 그의 결혼관, 가정관, 여성관뿐만 아니라 그의 세 차례 결혼 과정에서 서구화된 근대적 주체와 동아시아의 전근대적 관습이 충돌하는 양상을 확인하기 위한 연구이다. 윤치호는 전근대적인 첫 결혼에서 실패를 맛본 뒤, 해외 유학 생활 및 기독교 입교를 통해 근대적이면서도 성적으로 매우 보수적인 연애관 및 결혼관을 지니게 되었다. 중국 상해의 미국 조계에서 치러진 두 번째 결혼은 그의 이러한 가치관이 상당히 반영된 결혼이었는데, 결혼 과정에서 그의 가치관은 중국의 전근대적 관습/관념과 충돌하지만, 결혼 당사자 두 사람의 강한 의지와 기독교 선교사들의 지원을 통해 타협을 볼 수 있었다. 두 번째 아내의 갑작스런 죽음 직후 맞게 된 세 번째 결혼에서, 그는 한국의 강고한 전근대적 관습에 부딪혀 전형적인 전근대적 결혼을 치렀다. 이 결혼은 그의 의지와 상관없이 진행된 것이었지만, 그가 이를 큰 갈등 없이 받아들인 것은 그의 생을 관통하는, 가족 중심적이면서도 현실타협적인 태도와도 연관이 있는 것으로 사료된다. 다만 그의 가치관에 어긋난 현실 타협적 결혼은, 그가 수감 생활을 하게 된 일제의 한국 강제병합과 마찬가지로 그 에게 좋은 결과를 가져다주지는 못하였다.

This article examines the way in which a modernized / westernized subject come into conflict with premodern thoughts and customs based on Korean traditions, through the process of three different marriages which Yun Tchi - Ho went through and his views on the marriage , family values , and his spouse . After the dissolution of his first marriage a typical premodern Korean - style conjugal relation , Yun came to have a modern but conservative view on dating or getting marriage , through his conversion to Christianity and the campus life in U.S. which made him remain abstinent. Based on his modern views on the marriage , he got married with a Chinese woman in Shanghai in 1894. In the process of his second wedding , he had to struggle to persuade his future parents - in - law who asked him to follow Chinese traditional / premodern customs which he loathed so much . After several talks they finally reached a compromise , by the strong will of groom and bride, with the support of missionaries . Yun ’ s ideal relationship with his dear wife , however, did not last long because of her death in 1905. On the urging of his mother , he remarried with a Korean woman through another typical , traditional Korean wedding process and ceremony. Yun, a modernized subject , could not go through the irrationality of the premodern custom . Faced with the power of premodern Korean custom , however , he had to come to grips with reality. This unwanted wedding gave him some advantages , but eventually wound him in his life, like that Japanese colonization of Korea which sent him to prison through the Korea Conspiracy Case in 1912.
