글 없는 그림책을 활용한 이야기 만들기 활동에서 나타난 만 5세 유아의 내러티브 탐구

Narrative Analysis of Five-Year-Old Children Reading Wordless Books

본 연구는 소집단 내에서 글 없는 그림책 읽기활동을 통하여 일어나는 만 5세 유아들의 내러티브를 탐구해보고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 만 5세 유아의 글 없는 그림책을 통한 내러티브는 크게 함께 이야기 만들어 가기, 그림책 안에 머물기, 그림책 밖의 세상 끌어오기로 범주화 할 수 있었다. 유아들은 혼자 동화를 읽을 때와는 달리, 함께 이야기 꾸미기를 하며 서로가 서로의 반 응을 끌어주는 모습을 보였다. 또한 텍스트가 없는 동화책을 가지고 때론 책 속에 나오는 그림을 있는 그대로 읽어 나가며 이야기를 만들어가기도 하였고 자신들의 경험을 연결시켜 내용을 재구성하기도 하였다. 한편 의성어와 의태어를 사용한 상상적 내러티브를 통해 동화 내용을 더욱 풍성하게 만들기도 하였다. 이러한 연구결과를 통해 글 없는 그림책 읽기 활동을 계획하는 교사들이 아동들이 소집단 내에서 주고받는 또래 내러티브 활동 경험의 중요성을 인식하는 데 조금이나 보탬이 되고, 그 의미를 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이라 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the educational aspects of reading picture books and wordless picture books with children in a small group. Based on these educational benefits, this study attempted to understand the process in which 5-yearold children read and comprehend wordless picture books. This study found that the narrative of children when reading wordless books is categorized into three different processes: developing a plot individually, constructing a plot within the book, and, lastly, bringing a plot into the outside world. When children were reading the wordless book together, they communicated with each other, while creating a storyline; on the other hand, when they were reading alone, children did not communicate as much. Additionally, some of the children described a picture in the book and reconstructed anew story, projecting their own experience. Meanwhile, some children added up more plots to a book through an imaginative narrative, using onomatopoeia mimetic words – words that are formed by imitation of a sound. I expect the study can offer insights for teachers, planning an activity with wordless picture books, to better understand the inner psychological workings in children’s learning, development, and the importance of a cooperative narrative between children.
