김수환 추기경이 서울대교구 교구장으로 임명된 후 첫 강론 주제는 ‘세상 안의 교회’였다. ‘세상 안의 교회’는 제2차 바티칸 공의회의 교회 쇄신을 위한 중요한 주제였다. 그의 추기경 재임 시절의 중요한 과제는 바로, 공의회의 정신을 현대 사회 안에서 어떻게 실현하는가 하는 것이었다. 본 논문은 제2차 바티칸 공의회 정신이 김 추기경의 사상 안에서 어떻게 녹아있는지 그 내용을 밝히는 데에 집중했다. 공의회와 김 추기경은 처음부터 긴밀한 관계 안에 있었음을 알 수 있다. 그는 공의회 개최 이전에 젊은 시절 독일 유학을 통해서 변화를 준비하는 가톨릭교회를 몸으로 체험했고, 그곳에서 많은 기대를 가지고 공의회 개최를 맞이했다. 귀국 후에는 가톨릭신문사 사장을 하며 공의회의 모든 내용을 열정적으로 보도하면서, 공의회 정신을 마음에 새겼다. 그는 이러한 공의회 정신에 대한 이해를 통해, 이제는 교회가 세상 안에 존재하며, 세상과 더불어 대화해야 함을 이해하고 있었다. 그런데 공의회가 생각하는 대화의 주제는 현대 사회 안에서 인간이 겪고 있는 문제점을 이야기 싶은데 있었다. 이것은 추기경의 사상 안에서 한국 사회 안에서의 인권 침해에 대한 우려와 인간 존엄성 회복을 강조하는 모습으로 드러났다. 추기경이 생각하는 교회는「교회 헌장」1항에서 언급하고 있는 “온 인류가 이루는 일치의 표징이며 도구”였다. 즉, 교회는 인간과 인간을 갈라놓는 차별과 장벽을 헐고 불의와 부정을 제거하여 모든 이들이 하나가 될 수 있도록 한데 모으는 역할을 다해야 하는 것이다. 이를 위해서는 무엇보다 먼저 교회의 구성원들이 주위의 가난하고 소외된 사람들의 벗이 되어야 하며, 자신들의 것을 이웃과 나누는 모습이 요청된다. 사실 예수 그리스도의 전 생애는 모든 이들의 일치와 긴밀한 연관성이 있고, 궁극적으로는 자신을 남김없이 비우시어 밥이 되기까지 하시어 먹히는 존재가 되셨다. 김 추기경은「전례 헌장」47항의 “성체성사는 실로 구원과 해방의 성사, 일치의 성사이며, 신자든 비신자든 구별 없이 우리 모두와 이 세상을 위한 생명입니다.”라는 내용을 통하여 자신을 남김없이 바치는 그리스도의 모습이 성체성사 안에서 잘 드러나고 있음을 언급하였다. 살펴본 바와 같이 김 추기경은 제2차 바티칸 공의회 정신을 바탕에 두고 한국 사회 안에서 그 정신을 과감하게 실현하신 분이셨다. 그분의 말씀과 삶의 모습은 종파를 뛰어넘어 우리 사회의 수많은 사람들의 관심의 대상이었을 만큼, 우리 사회의 등불과도 같은 존재였다. 이제는 그분의 정신을 현재에 되새기며 가톨릭교회의 모습을 다시금 점검할 필요가 있다고 본다.
After having been appointed as the diocesan bishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul, the theme of Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan’s first sermon was the Church within the World. The Church within the World was an important theme to reform the Church in the 2 nd Vatican Council. The important task during his service as a cardinal was how to realize the spirit of the Council within modern society. This study focused on how the spirit of the 2 nd Vatican Council had been immersed in Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan’s thought. It was found that the Council and Cardinal Kim were closely related with each other from the beginning. He personally experienced the Catholic Church preparing for changes while studying in Germany in his younger days before the Council was held, and saw the Council held with great anticipation there. After returning home, he reported every content of the Council enthusiastically and kept the spirit of the Council in his mind while working as the president of the Catholic Times. Through the understanding of the spirit of the Council, Cardinal Kim understood that the Church now exists within the world and needs to talk with the world. He was well aware that the theme of the talk was problems men were experiencing within modern society. This was revealed as emphasis on the restoration of human dignity as well as on concerns about violation of human rights in the South Korean society within his thought. For Cardinal Kim, the Church was “a sign and instrument of the unity of the whole human race”, as mentioned in Article 1 of ｢Lumen Gentium｣. In other words, the Church needs to fulfill its roles by removing the discrimination and barriers among men, by getting rid of injustice and unfairness, and by uniting all the people. To do this, the members of the Church first of all need to be friends with poor and alienated people around them and to share what they have with their neighbors. Indeed, the whole life of Jesus Christ was closely related with the unity of the whole human race and, ultimately, He emptied Himself completely and even offered Himself in sacrifice. On the basis of Article 47 of ｢Sacrosanctum Concilium｣, Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan mentioned that the “Eucharist was truly a sacrament of redemption, liberation, and unity” and that “both believers and nonbelievers were lives for all of us and this world” and emphasized that Christ who offers Himself completely is well revealed in the Eucharist. In short, Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan decisively realized the spirit of the 2 nd Vatican Council within the South Korean society on the basis of the spirit. As his words and life have drawn attention from a number of people in the South Korean society, regardless of denominations, he was like a lamp in the society. It is now necessary to meditate on his thought and check what the Catholic Church is like again.
