This study describes a series of processes for development of a survey aimed at understanding the actual state of an infectious disease. It includes planning of a survey for estimation of the prevalence, analysis of investigated data and appraisal of the operation. Examples were inspired from a survey on bovine tuberculosis in Korean native cattle (Bos taurus coreanae), conducted between October and December 2007. The methodology concerns stratification, two-stage cluster sampling, intracluster correlation, and the probability of detecting cases in a population. This study is expected to serve as an example in operating surveillance and monitoring systems for animal health programs at the national level.
