가덕도(장항)유적의 사회적 생물고고학

A Social Bioarchaeology of the Site of Gadeokdo, Busan: An Experimental Approach to the Integrated Understanding on the Neolithic Mortuary Practice

가덕도(장항)유적의 발견과 조사는 신석기시대 매장행위의 일면을 보여주는 것 이상의 의미를 지닌다. 그간 흔히 접할 수 있었던 매장시설과 부장양상 외에, 피장자의 형질ㆍ병리적 특성은 물론 주검의 처리에 관계된 풍부한 정보를 획득할 수 있었기 때문이다. 정보의 증대는, 한편으로 그것을 체계적이고 통합적으로 처리하여야 하는 상황을 직면하게 되었음을 의미하기도 한다. 본고는 사회적 생물고고학의 접근을 그러한 상황의 돌파구로 제시한다. 형질(인류학)적 검토, 다변량(계량)분석, 공간분석 등의 작업이 선행됨으로써 그러한 접근이 가능하게 된다. 다양한 검토와 분석의 결과, 가덕도(장항) 신석기시대 묘역의 조성에는 사회의 종ㆍ횡적 분절이 어느 정도 작동했던 것으로 판단된다. 통시적 관점에서 볼 때, 사회계층화가 확연해지는 시점에 비해서는 횡적 분절의 정도는 미약하다. 다만 성별이나 생산자원의 성격에 따른 분화, 즉 종적 분절의 양상은 상대적으로 더 역동적이기도 하다. 일반적인 남해안지역 매장유적의 규모로 볼 때 이 묘역의 조성은, 상호 심하게 이격되지는 않지만 매장관행이 다소 상이한 집단들에 의해 이루어졌을 수도 있는바, 그러한 종적 분절이 거주역이 분리된 집단 간 상이성을 전제할 가능성도 배제할 수 없다.

The archaeological site of Gadeokdo holds a critically important role in understanding Neolithic mortuary practice. Beyond burial structure and grave goods, commonly found data in other similar sites, Gadeokdo has the potential to shed light on the multi-dimensional understanding of mortuary practices, through the physical and pathological characteristics of the buried. The bioarchaeological data sample also provides a unique opportunity for a systematic and organized analysis of data. This paper offers a social bioarchaeological approach, using methodology from biological anthropology, multivariate statistics, and spatial analysis. Results of analyses show that vertical and horizontal social cleavages played a role in the formation of Gadeokdo Neolithic cemetery. Considering the intensification of social stratification occurring at the time, the degree of horizontal cleavage is weak. Vertical cleavage from the division by gender and production resources, however, is rather dynamic compared to horizontal cleavage. It is quite possible to infer that such vertical cleavage pattern is a result of different populations based on differentiated residence.
