최근 대한민국 사회에 있어서 촛불집회는 엄청난 변화를 가져왔으며, 세계 언론의 주목을 받고 있다. 본 논문은 최근에 연이어 있었던 대한민국의 촛불집회의 역사를 살펴봄으로써 그 본질에 대한 통찰을 제공하고자 한다. 본 논문은 특정한 리더에 의해 조직화되지 않은채 비폭력성을 유지했던 촛불 시위가 어떻게 전개되어 왔는지를 검토하고, 외국의 다른 평화적인 시위와 비교함으로서 촛불시위의 미래가 어떠한 모습으로 그리고 누구를 향하여 전개될 것인지를 제시하고자 한다.
Candlelight rallies have proven to be an important catalyst for change in modern Korean society, and so have recently moved to the forefront of world consciousness in the context of public demonstrations. This article will provide an insight into these rallies, featuring information about their history, and a description of the qualities of these events. This article will examine how these non-violent rallies which were not organised by group leaders were evolved, and will conclude with some speculation on how these rallies may evolve in the future by comparing to other peaceful demonstrations around the world.
