조선 후기 科表의 문체적 특징과 글쓰기

Joseon Exam Writing Gwa-pyo s Characteristics and its Writing in Reference Books

본고는 조선의 과거시험에서 주요 시험 문체로 활용되었던 과표에 대한 연구이다. 과표에 대한 전문적인 연구는 그리 많지 않다. 최근에서야 과표문체에 대한 전문적인 연구가 한 편 제출되었을 뿐이다. 본고는 여러 도서관들에 소장되어 있는 과표 작성을 위한 참고서들을 참조하여, 선행 연구에서 보이는 문제점들을 지적하고, 과표 문체의 특성과 글쓰기 방식을 검토 한다. 조선 전기에 과표는 일반 표문 문체와 흡사한 구성과 글쓰기 방식을 보이나, 조선 후기에 접어들면서 특유의 정격이 형성되었고, 대다수의 과표문이이 정격에 맞춰 작성되기 시작하였다. 17세기 후반부터 과표 글쓰기에 전면적으로 적용되기 시작한 이 정격은 과표 뿐만 아니라 과시나 과부 등 기타 과문 문체에도 비슷한 방식으로 적용되었다. 정격이 확립되면서, 과문 글쓰기 방식에는 상당한 변화가 생겼으며, 여러 종류의 과표 참고서들은 이 정격을 기본으로 하여, 다양한 시제에 대응할 수 있는 내용들을 체계적으로 담아내기 시작하였다. 본고는 과표 참고서에서 보이는 글쓰기 방식이 단순히 과거 시험 준비를 위한 용도를 넘어, ‘일반 글쓰기’ 더 나아가 조선의 문화 전반에 유무형의 영향을 주었다고 파악하고 있다.

This paper is a study on the Gwa-pyo (科表) that was used as one of main examination subjects in the civil examination of Joseon. There have not been many professional studies on Gwa-pyo, that only recently, a professional research on Gwa-pyo has been presented. In this paper, I will point out some problems in the previous research and identify new characteristics and writing methods of Gwa-pyo by referring to reference books for writing Gwapyo in various libraries. In the early Joseon Dynasty, Gwa-pyo had a composition and writing style similar to that of the generalized form of Pyo 表, while the unique form of writing emerged as an absolute writing model for writing Gwa-pyo in the late period of the Joseon Dynasty. This form of writing has been applied to writing not only Gwa-pyo but also other forms of civil exam writing such as Gwa-si 科詩 and Gwa-bu 科賦. With the establishment of this form of writing, many changes were made in the writing methods of Gwa-pyo and many reference books were created for coping with this change. This paper argues that this method of writing has influenced the general culture of Joseon as much as the ‘normal’ writings at that time beyond the purpose of preparation for taking civil examination.
