타라 도노반의 반복적 집적과 일루전의 해방

Tara Donovan’s Repetitive Accumulation and Liberation of the Illusion

본 논문은 미국 뉴욕을 기반으로 세계적으로 활발하게 활동을 하고 있는 설치미술 작가 타라 도노반(Tara Donovan, 1969-)의 작품을 ‘일상 오브제의 반복적 집적’과 ‘자연 과정의 모방, 해방된 일루전’ 이라는 관점에서 다룬 연구이다. 현대 미술에서 오브제의 도입이 설치미술의 등장에 미친 영향 관계를 검토하고, 이를 토대로 타라 도노반의 작품을 연구하였다. 타라 도노반의 작품은 형식적인 측면에서 일상적인 오브제를 선택하고 무수한 양을 반복적으로 집적하여 제작된다는 특징을 갖고 있다. 이때 집적의 방식이 갖는 특성은 작가의 의도가 최대한 배제되고, 오브제의 물질적 특성에 기인한 생성 원리와 우연에 의거한다는 것에 있다. 도노반의 반복적인 작업과정은 생명 체가 성장하는 듯한 유기적인 형태를 낳게 되는데, 이는 공간 속으로 무한히 성장할 수 있는 확장의 속성을 지니고 있다. 그는 자연을 충실하게 재현하기 보다는 유사 일루전을 형성하는 생성의 법칙을 적용한다. 일상의 재료와 집적의 과정을 통해 발아, 성장, 죽음과 같은 반복적으로 순환하는 자연의 과정을 암시하게 된다. 그는 작품 제작 과정과 재료를 있는 그대로 노출시킴으로써 팝, 미니멀리즘, 포스트 미니멀리즘 계열을 계승하면서, ‘집적’이라는 생성적, 확산적 방식을 도입하여 전통적 의미의 재현과 일루전의 족쇄에서 미술을 해방시킨다. 더불어 자연으로부터 추출되어 무분 별하게 사용되고 버려지는 것들이 만들어 놓은 허상의 자연을 작품으로 보여줌으로써 환경과 사회에 대한 메시지를 전달함에 의미를 갖고 있다.

Moreover, it is meant to convey messages about the environment and society aims by presenting illusion of nature produced from nature and being indiscriminate and abandoned by nature.
