염상섭 「백구」에 나타난 통속화 전략의 의미

서사전략이란 그 작품이 선택하는 미 혹은 선의 문제가 된다.「백구」를 중심으로 한 염상섭의 서사전략을 검토한 결과는 다음과 같다. 우선 형식적 차원의 전략으로 첫째, 신문연재 장편소설이라는 장르로서의 특성과 장별 쪼개기이다. 염상섭은 장별 구획을 하고 소제목을 사용하는데,「백구」의 소제목은 적절성이 다소 부족하다. 둘째, 주의 환기로서의 매체 활용을 볼 수 있다. 염상섭은 작품 속에서 라디오, 신문 등의 대중매체와 편지라는 매체를 활용하여 대중들에게 주의 환기를 시키고 있다. 이상이 이전 작품들에서도 나타났던 것이라면 이후는 「백구」에서부터 두드러지는 전략으로 보인다. 셋째, 플롯의 단순화와 서사의 생략이다. 대중에게 좀 더 쉽게 다가가기 위한 방식으로 플롯과 인물, 사건을 단순화하였으며 서사를 생략하는 방법을 사용하고 있다. 다음 내용상 서사전략을 살펴보면, 첫째, 강점 하 개인적 삶의 부정성을 보였다. 그는 연애를 개성과 개인의 자각으로 본 바 있는데, 그런 연애와 행복한 결혼의 불가능성을 통하여 강점 하 사회에서 개인의 행복이 불가능함을 보이는 것이다. 둘째, 사회적 삶의 불안정성과 부조리 사회를 고발하고 있다. 개인의 삶을 벗어나 사회적 관계 속에서 도모하는 인물들이 서사에서 사라지게 함으로써 그러한 삶에 대한 비관을 보여준다. 셋째, 술과 마작의 시대를 강조한다. 강점 하 이러한 주제의식 표현이 가능했던 것은 염상섭의 형식상 서사전략 덕분으로 보인다.
