A Study on Local Permanent Market Regeneration Plans through Youth Cooperatives Focusing on Cheonjeon Market in Jinju

Currently, there is a Special Law on urban regeneration revitalization and support (enacted on June 4th 2013) and according to the law, a lot of urban regeneration projects for revitalizing the old downtowns are in progress. Urban regeneration must be based on a stereoscopic method, which considers all of social and economic aspects, in addition to physical aspects, such as facility improvement. Also, sustainable urban regeneration is needed, not temporary regeneration. For sustainable urban regeneration, the projects should be led by local residents, not by an one-sided intervention of public institution. Urban regeneration necessarily leads to gentrification. There are already a variety of papers regarding sustainable urban regeneration and revitalization of traditional markets and each local government is carrying forward different urban regeneration projects. In Jinju, Gyeongsannam-do, there are many deteriorated regions and there is an absence of specific and voluntary regeneration projects for regional revitalization. In particular, Cheonjeon Market in Jinju absolutely requires urban regeneration for market revitalization. Therefore, this study aims to suggest revitalization plans for stagnant local permanent markets by considering improvement in software and hardware, such as youth cooperatives that consist of local young people.
