English Education As Liberal Arts, Converged with Humanities for Fostering Global Elites – On the Basis of Reading -

The purpose of this study is to research for not only how to improve the ability of the English language as a tool but also to broaden knowledge about people and the world in order to belong to internationalization. As a part of this, I focused on English converged humanities and media contents. Media contents or literature are able to offer students the opportunities to grasp international perspectives of foreign countries and their people’s lives. It is said that English education can not help but start from learning English as a tool. However, at a university at least, this education should not end by simply memorizing words and grammar, or merely understanding the literal meaning of sentences. It should be extended for deeper study. In other words, to read English means to understand the implications of sentences with basic academic knowledge and broader perspectives of the world. With this in mind, excellent materials in English such as famous speeches or English literary works will be helpful for them to acquire ability. However, the achievement is only possible through mutual effort, including interaction between the lecturer and the students. If so, the class can reach the goal of fostering global elites with both creativity and humanity.
