The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set up an Emission Control Area (ECA) in some areas of the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the US to regulate the use of cleaner fuels with lower sulfur content than HFO, And the demand for clean water will increase. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from ships are also required to be reduced by 75% compared to the Tier II level by applying the Tier III regulation. IMO is expected to reduce GHG emissions by 20% by 2020 and by 50% by 2050 compared to the level of 2005 in the number of vessels to be built, and strengthening regulations to install only new vessels in compliance with EEDI regulations. Following the announcement of the Maritime Transport Strategy 2009∼2018 in 2009, Europe is strongly promoting the use of LNG by drastically strengthening ship fuel regulations, such as changing the guidelines for sulfur content of ship fuel in 2012. Likewise, Japan is making efforts to formulate international standards such as safety technologies for the early introduction and practical use of natural gas fuel vessels equipped with LNG storage facilities at the government level. In line with the strengthening of environmental regulations and the trend toward high oil prices, Korea has recently launched the LNG Bunkering Council with 15 members including shipyards and shipping companies including KOGAS, and has been developing LNG bunker technology and standardization and system improvement. This study aims to compare the technology, policy, and development status of LNG propulsion ship, which is an eco -friendly marine technology, with the trend of strengthening marine environment regulation in terms of Europe, Japan, China and Korea, and to find out how to improve Korea s competitiveness.
