교과교육 분야 질적연구의 타당도 확보 기법에 대한 고찰 - 참여자 확인, 동료검토, 감사추적을 중심으로 -

A review on verification strategies for qualitative research : Focusing on member check, peer debrief, and audit trail

본 연구는 교과교육 분야에서 질적연구의 수는 지속적으로 늘어나고 있으나, 질적연구의 질적 수준에 대한 의심과 불신이 여전히 줄어들고 있지 않으며, 질적연구의 타당성 확보 전략에 대한 체계적이고 심층적인 논의가 미흡하다는 문제의식에서 출발하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 타당도 확보 기법들 중에서, 국내 교과교육 연구에서 가장 많이 활용되고 의미적 혼란이 있어 보이는 ‘참여자 확인’, ‘동료검토’, ‘감사추적’ 등을 종합적으로 고찰하고 있다. 고찰 결과는 각 타당도 전략에 대한 포괄적인 정의, 국내 교과교육 분야 논문에서 실제로 적용된 양상, 해당 타당도 기법의 가능성과 유의점을 중심을 논의하고 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 질적연구를 통하여 어떻게 하면 보다 신빙성 있는 연구결과를 제시할 수 있을까 고민하는 실천 지향적인 교과교육 연구자들에게 타당도 확보 전략에 대한 균형 잡히고 종합적인 시각을 제시해 줄 것으로 기대된다. 아울러, 본 연구는 타당도 기법에 대한 심층적인 이해, 연구 전반에 걸친 연구자의 결정과 정당화 논리, 현상을 이해하기 위하여 분투하는 연구자의 일관성 등에서 질적연구의 엄정성이 확보될 수 있다는 관점을 제시해 주고 있다.

Since the mid 90s, the number of qualitative research has been constantly increasing in Korean educational research context. However, this does not necessary mean that qualitative research is recognized as a credible and alternative research method that can compete with quantitative research within the scholarly community. One simple reason for this kind of phenomenon is that the issues of rigor and strategies for ensuring validity in qualitative research have not been addressed in detail in previous studies. With this in mind, this study thoroughly reviews and analyzes member check , peer review , audit trail , three most often used strategies for ensuing rigor in qualitative research in Korean educational research context. Results of analysis are organized around three themes such as 1) compressive definition of each strategy; 2) a brief examples of each strategy used in various studies; 3) possibilities and potential limitations lie in each strategy. This study concludes with a suggestion that analytical strategies and procedures themself do not guarantee rigor. In other words, rigor resides in, is inherent in, manifest in rigorous thinking, including methods and analysis.
