Professionalism of the Nursing Staff

Purpose: This is a descriptive study that aimed to identify the levels of professionalism as well as the factors affecting it among nursing staff. Methods: Data were collected from 230 nursing staff at a university hospital in Daegu city from March 13th, 2013 to March 22nd, 2013. Research tools were a questionnaire composed of 28 questions which was based on Professionalism Inventory Scale (1968) developed by Hall and revised by Chu Hyeon-shim (2001). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson s correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analyses. Results: The results of this study showed total average score of the subjects professionalism was 3.38 out of 5.00 and average scores of each subdomain of professionalism, compliance with professional organizations, civic virtues, autonomy, sense of mission, and self-regulation were 3.00, 3.39, 3.42, 3.55, and 3.34, respectively. There were significant differences in professionalism according to age, education, marriage status and years of service. Among the significant factors affecting professionalism was length of years of service which explained 18% of the total variance for the professionalism (p<.001). Conclusion: This study showed that length of service as a nursing staff affects their professionalism. Therefore, efforts are necessary to strengthen years of service as a nursing staff and organizational support is required for the enhancement of nursing staff s professionalism.
