『캔터베리 이야기』 현대어 번역에 대한 재고: 점성술 분야를 중심으로

A Review on the Modern Translations of The Canterbury Tales: Focusing on the Terms of Astrology

제프리 초서 번역은 몇 가지 측면에서 어려움에 봉착하게 된다. 첫 번째는 중세어라는 고전어에 대한 정확한 의미 추정에 있으며, 두 번째는 초서가 의도한 어휘들이 많은 경우 표면적인 의미를 넘어서 은유 등의 상징성을 지니기 때문이며, 세 번째는 500년이 넘는 시대의 간극에서 발생할 수 있는 개념의 차이를 극복할 수 있는 적합한 현대어 대응어 선택의 어려움 때문이다. 초서의 많은 작품이 입증하듯이 그는 다방면에서 백과사전적 지식을 겸비하고 그러한 지식을 작품 속에서 십분 활용하고 있음을 알 수있다. 하지만 학자들은 그가 전문 분야에 대한 학술적 차원의 지식을 지녔을 것이라는 데는 회의를 표명하고 있다. 다만 그가 작품에서 다루고자 하는 특정 분야들 예를 들면, 점성술 등에 있어서는 중세인들이 지녔던 상식 수준을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 지식을 지녔을 것으로 간주한다. 점성술에 관한 그의 관심은 다름 아닌 점성술이 지닌 시대적 의의에 기인한다. 초서 시대의 중세인들은 별자리 혹은 점성술의 영향력을 깊이 의식하고 있었기 때문에 이러한 중세인들의 공감을 끌어내기 위한 방편으로 초서는 점성술을 하나의 중요한 문학적 기제로 사용했을 것이다. 국내외 많은 현대어 역자들이 초서가 인용한 점성술에 관한 전문용어들 예를 들면, aspect, disposicioun, constellacioun 등과 관련문구의 해석에 있어 오역, 탈역, 축역(縮譯)등의 오류를 범하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내외 역자들의 역서를 중심으로 해석상의 차이를 검증하며 동시에 인용된 용어와 문구들에 관한 최적의 해석을 시도하여 초서 번역의 완성도를 높이는데 기여 하고자 한다.

In the Middle Ages there was wide-spread belief in the science of astrology, according to which the heavenly bodies, and especially the planets, had a direct effect on human life. The character and fate of an individual were influenced by the configuration of the stars at her or his birth. Moreover, certain planets were dominant in a certain period and at certain time of day, and were then able to influence the human life in general. It is quite certain that Chaucer, well aware of the influence of astrology or fortune on Medieval people, tried to reflect their influence on the characters as shown in The Canterbury Tales. Hence it is important to determine exact meanings of some key words in astrology, particularly in the tales of “The Knight’s Tale” and “The Frankline’s Tale.” This is mainly because of the literary function of astrology, which became a major subject matter and a dominant force controlling the major characters. However, modern translations fall short of proper interpretations of some astrological words and phrases as seen in interpretations of aspect, disposicioun, constellacioun, etc. I examined those words above in some of modern representative versions in both the Korean and modern English translations of The Canterbury Tales, based on various views of leading scholars such as F N Robinson, Larry D Benson, A C Spearing, and Norman Davis. Besides, I suggested some alternative interpretations for the words or phrases in question.
