근대전환기 한 양반의 첩에 대한 인식과 그 의미

학초 박학래는 한때 동학농민군 지도자로 활약하기도 하고 평생을 변호사로 일하여 근대전환기를 역동적으로 살았던 인물이다. 그는 부실 강씨가 사망하자 가사문학 <쳐사영결가>(1901년)를 써서 애도했으며, 뒤에 자신이 살아온 인생을 서술한 국문실기 <학초전>(1923년)에서도 특별히 부실 강씨를 칭송했다. 이 논문의 목적은 두 글쓰기에 나타난 근대전환기 한 양반의 첩에 대한 인식과 그 의미를 규명하는 데 있다. 박학래는 평생 정실과 결혼생활을 유지하면서도 3명의 첩을 두고 산 축첩의 실현자였다. 박학래가 두 글쓰기에서 서술한 부실 강씨는 부실과 정실의 형상을 합친 완벽한 여성의 형상으로 나타난다. 박학래의 부실에 대한 인식은 부실이라는 신분적 한계에도 불구하고 가정 내에서 부실을 정실의 반열에 끌어 올리고 정실과 부실의 차별을 두지 않으려 한 것이었다. 두 글쓰기에서 정실의 존재감이 거의 없으며, 처첩 간의 갈등도 거의 나타나지 않는다. 이점은 박학래가 ‘세 내외’가 살았던 삶을 이상적으로만 그리면서 오로지 부실에게만 시선을 두는 자기 중심적인 사고를 지녔기 때문이다. 박학래가 부실의 위상을 격상시키고자 한 것은 다름 아닌 가부장제적 남성 중심의 사고에서 비롯된 것이라고 할 수 있다. 근대전환기에는 신구 가치관과 이념이 교차되면서 남성의 첩에 대한 인식이 매우 중층적으로 변화해나갔다. 박학래는 근대전환기에 첩에 대한 인식의 혼란 속에서도 축첩을 당연하게 여겼다. 동시에 그는 첩에 대한 인식의 혼란을 틈타 전근대사회의 규범에서 일탈하여 과감하게 부실의 위상을 정실의 반열로 올리고 부실과 정실의 차별을 없애고자 했다. 박학래의 첩에 대한 인식은 근대전환기 신구 이념의 교차 시기에 ‘가부장제적 남성 중심의 사고’를 보다 진전시키려한 한 남성의 사례를 반영하고 있다는 의미를 지닌다.

HakCho Park-HakLae(1864~1943) had dynamically lived at the historically transferring period to Modern period. He participated DongHak in 1894, and work ed as a lawyer in whole lifetime. When his second wife died, he wrote Gasa <CheoSaYoungGoulGa> which lamented her death. And he praised his second wife in Hangul Documentary <HakChoJeon> which wrote his whole life. The purpose of this study is to identify awareness on the second wife of one Royal and to clarify it s significance. While living with the first wife, at the same time he lieved the second wife in his home. Personality that he described about the second wife in two works is a perfect personality of woman which combines the first wife s and the first wife s. A awareness on the second wife of Park-HakLae is to lift the second wife to the position of the first wife. In two works, the first wife has no presence, there is no conflict between the first wife and the second wife. This is because he only gave his attention on the second wife. That he left the second wife to the position of the first wife was originated the male-centered thought. The historically transferring period to Modern period was a time when new values and old values are exchanged. In confusion on new and old values of this period, he deviated from the pre-modern society norm and boldly intended to lift the second wife to the position of the first wife. At the historically transferring period to Modern period, his awareness on the second wife has the significance which reflects a example of one nobility who intended to advanced his male-centered thought.
