Exploring Vocabulary Selection Criteria in Developing a Basic English Vocabulary List

2015 영어과 개정 교육과정의 큰 변화 중 하나는 영어과 기본 어휘의 개정이다. 이문복과 신동광(2015)의 연구는 새로운 교육과정 기본 어휘 목록 개발의 개괄적인 개발 절차를 소개하였다. 하지만 이들의 연구에서도 기존의 해외에서 개발된 어휘목록의 개발 과정과 차별화된 ‘친숙도’와 ‘초등권장 어휘 추천’과 같은 주관성을 배제 하기 힘든 어휘 선정 기준의 세부 적용 절차는 제시하지 않았다. 또한 최근에 Benigno와 de Jong(2015)이 적용한 바 있는 어휘 선정 기준들의 총합(combined score) 적용 방식은 이번 기본 어휘 목록 개발에는 적용되지 못했다. 따라서 본 연구 에서는 EFL 환경의 사회·문화적 특성을 반영하여 어휘의 학습 난이도를 구분하는데 필요하다고 제안된 ‘친숙도’와 ‘초등권장 어휘 추천’의 세부 적용 방식과 8개 유형의 어휘 선정 기준의 적용 방식을 비교하여 추후 개선된 어휘 목록 개발을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 연구의 결과를 살펴보면, 기본 어휘 후보에 대한 ‘친숙도’와 ‘초등권장 어휘 추천’ 평정에 참여한 초등과 중등 교사 인식에는 유의미한 차이가 존재했다. 또한 8개의 어휘 선정 기준의 적용 방식, 즉 각 기준 수치의 순차 적용과 합산 적용 방식, 원점수 적용과 t점수 적용 방식, 그리고 각 기준별 가중치 적용 여부등을 비교·분석한 결과, 원점수에 가중치를 부여하여 합산하는 방식이 텍스트 포괄범위(text coverage) 면에서 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 이를 일반화하기 위해서는 실제 학습에 적용한 결과를 비교하는 등의 추가적인 연구가 필요하다고 판단된다.

One of the major changes in the 2015 Revised National Curriculum of English is the revision of the Korean Basic English Word List (KBEWL). The 2015 KBEWL is meaningful because it was developed by directly extracting words from a variety of representative corpora of English, unlike the former KBEWLs. The purpose of this study is to elaborate the development process of the 2015 revised KBEWL and especially to examine how to apply the vocabulary selection criteria of ‘Vocabulary Familiarity and ‘Elementary-level Vocabulary Recommendation’ which could reflect the socio-cultural characteristics of Korea in terms of the ease of learning and difficulty of vocabulary. In addition, eight different methods for applying vocabulary selection criteria, for example, sequential or sum application of each reference value, raw or t score application, and different weighting on each criterion were compared. As a result, the method based on the combined raw scores with a different weight on each criterion showed the best text coverage at the elementary level. In a New Zealand corpus, the 800 elementary-level word families covered even 75% of English. In conclusion, the present study attempted to provide some implications for the development of more valid and reliable vocabulary lists in the future.
