세 가지 관점에서 본 큐레이터의 전문성 구성요인

A Study on the Constituents of Curator’s Professionalism from Three Perspectives

본 연구는 미술관 및 박물관 전·현직 종사자를 대상으로 큐레이터가 갖추어야 하는 전문성 구성요인을 분석하고, 각 요인들이 큐레이터 개인의 전문성과 미술관 운영에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보는데 있다. 따라서 전문성 이론과 개념을 알아보고, 이를 기초로 큐레이터의 전문성 요인을 도출하였다. 현재 시점의 다양한 관점들을 반영하기 위해 국ㆍ공립 및 사립미술관과 박물관에서의 근무경험이 있는 경력큐레이터와 상급관리자, 연구원 등 총 18명을 대상으로 2017년 3월 24일부터 4월 14일까지 심층인터뷰를 시행하였다. 그래서 큐레이터의 전문성에 대한 시각과 그 저해 요인에 대해 어떻게 이해하고 있는지, 전문성과 효율성은 어떻게 조절되어야 하는지를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 개인적 자질과 외부 환경적 영향은 시대적 가치를 바탕에 두고 적절히 조절되어 적용되었을 때 최고수준의 전문성이 발휘될 수 있다는 것이다. 이를 위해 큐레이터에게는 체계적이고 의식적인 자기 계발이 필수적으로 뒷받침되어야 한다. 큐레이터의 전문성은 결국 사회적 공공성 실현을 위한 맞춤형 전문성이어야 한다는 것이다. 큐레이터가 전문가로서 최고의 역량을 발휘하기 위해서는 개인의 자기계발 못지않게 이에 따른 맞춤형 제도 또한 중요하다. 나아가 문화예술의 활성화를 위해서는 전문성에 대한 이해와 그 필요성을 인식하고 이에 대한 다양한 관점에서의 연구가 지속적으로 필요한 만큼 본 연구가 큐레이터의 전문성과 그 사회적 가치를 확보하고 실현하는데 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the constituents of the professionalism required of the art museum curators and thereupon, examine the effects of each constituent on curators professionalism and their operation of the art museum. For this purpose, former and current art museum curators were sampled for an in-depth interview. First of all, this study reviewed the theories and concepts of professionalism and thereupon, determined the constituents of curators professionalism. Then, this study sampled 18 career curators, senior managers and researchers who had ever worked for national, public and private art museums for an in-depth interview conducted from March 24 to April 14, 2017. Then, this study analyzed their opinions about curators professionalism, the factors impeding their professionalism, and thereby, surveyed them for their perceptions of professionalism and efficiency required of them. As a result, it was found that their professionalism would be demonstrated most effectively when they were aware of the historical values and their individual talent could be supported well by the external environmental influences. To this end, it was deemed necessary for them to develop their capacity systematically and positively. In short, curators professionalism should be well-customized to help realize the social or public interests of art museums. In order for a curator to demonstrate his or her maximum capacity as a professional, it is deemed essential to operate a customized training system. Furthermore, in order to activate culture and arts, it is required of our community to understand and value their professionalism, while multi-faceted studies should be conducted to find the ways to help them enhance their capacity. Lastly, it is hoped that this study would conduce to enhancement of curators professionalism and their social values.
