During the socialist times domestic violence was seen as a private matter and, therefore, was deeply hidden. It has overflown these boundaries with the start of development of a market-oriented, free society and has become a public issue that requires State regulation. Though, both the public and decision-makers have started understanding that domestic violence is a serious form of discrimination and a violation of universal human rights it still has not been accepted as a crime. While many important studies have been conducted about violence against women and domestic violence there is a shortage of studies on the economic costs of such violence and its consequences on health
