중학생의 인지전략이 학업성취에 미치는 영향: 저소득층과 일반가정 청소년 비교를 중심으로

Effects of cognitive strategies on academic achievement: A comparison between adolescents in low-income families and families without financial difficulties

본 연구에서는 한국교육종단연구(KELS) 데이터를 사용하여 교육소외계층 저소 득층 청소년의 학업성취에 영향을 미치는 인지적 요인을 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 중학생의 인지전략을 정보처리 수준 이론에 따라 표층적 인지전략인 시연과 심층적 인지전략인 정교화로 구분하여 저소득층 청소년과 일반가정 청소년 집단 간 에 차이를 보이는지를 국어, 영어, 수학 교과별로 검증하였다. 연구결과, 저소득층 청소년이 일반가정 청소년에 비해 정교화 전략과 학업성취 수준이 낮은 것으로 나 타났다. 한편, 교과별로 진행한 위계적 중다회귀분석에서 국어 교과의 경우, 저소득 층 여부와 정교화 전략이 국어 성취도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또 한, 영어와 수학 교과의 경우 저소득층 여부와 정교화 전략이 각각 학업성취에 유의 미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 저소득 여부와 인지전략의 상호작 용을 살펴보았을 때, 영어 및 수학 교과 학업성취에서 유의미한 것으로 나타나 심층 적 인지전략인 정교화 전략이 학업성취에 미치는 영향이 저소득층 여부에 따라 다 르게 나타남을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 시사점은 대규모 데이터를 활용하여 인 지전략이 학업성취에 미치는 영향이 저소득층 여부와 교과목에 따라 다르게 나타남 을 확인하였다는 점에서 찾을 수 있다.

This study examined whether there was any difference in the relationship between cognitive strategies and academic achievement depending on middle school students’ family income status. Independent samples t-tests were conducted to examine whether there was any difference in the use of cognitive strategies and academic achievement between the adolescents of low-income family and normal income family. Also, to find out if the family income status x cognitive strategy interaction affected the adolescents academic achievement, hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted. The main findings of the study are as follow. First, the adolescents from low-income family show lower average scores in the academic achievement and in the utilization of elaboration strategy , one of the cognitive strategies that requires deep information processing, compared to the adolescents from normal-income family. Second, the result of analysis of the family income level x elaboration interaction shows that there is a difference in the effect of cognitive strategy on the academic achievement depending on the adolescents‘ family income level. This study has an important implication as it explored the cognitive aspect of the adolescents of the low-income family by applying the information processing level theory.
