In order to find new tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidant materials, we investigated 162 extracts (71 plants) according to plant parts and extraction conditions, which were evaluated for the anti-tyrosinase and antioxidant activities. The mushroom tyrosinase inhibition assay and 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay were conducted to evaluate these activities. The tyrosinase inhibition efficacy was tested at a concentration of 100 μg/㎖ and the antioxidant activity was tested at a concentration of 62.5 μg/㎖. The degree of effectiveness was classified into 4 grades according to efficacy rate (%). The antioxidant activity of the extracts was examined by using the extracts with more than 50% tyrosinase inhibitory effect. Most of the 11 extracts (7 plants) that showed 50% tyrosinase inhibition showed antioxidant activity. Even the same plants had different effects depending on the extraction conditions according to the solvent and temperature. Among all tested plant extracts, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. Sedum kamtschaticum Fisch. Fallopia multiflora (Thunb.) Haraldson , Morus alba L. Dendranthema zawadskii var. tenuisectum Kitag ., Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala (Maxim.) Wesm., Chrysanthemum burbankii Makino exhibit higher tyrosinase inhibition. We intend to contribute to discovering whitening and antioxidant cosmetic raw materials by examining the detailed effects in the future.
