Schisandrin is one of the lignan components of, which is clinically prescribed to treat hepatitis. It has been reported to protect against CCl4-induced hepatic damage. Its components can induce liver cytochrome P-450 and promote certain anabolicmetabolisms such as serumprotein biosynthesis and glycogenesis. All of these activitieswould be helpful in protecting and repairing injured liver cells, and they are thought to be mediated through anti-inflammatory activity. The object of this study was to evaluate the effect of hot-water extract of Schisandra chinensis on anti-oxidant and anti-aging characteristics available to cosmetic ingredients. The dried Schisandra chinensis leaves (600g) were extracted with 3000 ml of hot-water (105℃) for 4 h. The extraction solution was filtered by double layer clothes. The extract was concentrated to 30 °brix by rotary vaporization at 40℃ under reduced pressure. The amount of total phenols, flavonoids, antioxidant activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity, elastase activity, and hyaluronidase activity was measured. The Schisandra chinensis. hot-extract showed that the 96.41mg phenolic compounds GAE (gallic acid) /100 g of compounds, 26.83 flavonoids mg/100 g of compounds, 67.96 % DPPH radical scavenging capacity, 20.80% ABTS radical scavenging capacity, 38.37% inhibition of hyaluronidase activity, and 41.63% inhibition of elastase activity. Therefore, this result suggests that hot-water Schisandra chinensis extract gives the possibility to use at the cosmetic manufacture as a functional ingredient.
