The New Approaches to the Improvement of Plant Breeding Techniques

This paper has reviewed some of the recent development on the fusion of plant protoplasts, reciprocal translocation of chromosome and anther culture, and has made some discussions about the possibility of applying these knowledges in the improvement of breeding techniques. The knowledge on the fusion of plant protoplasts may be utilized in obtaining hybrid between different species or genera. The reciprocal translocation of chromosome can be used in producing seedless hybrid seed in horticultural crops, or shortening the breeding period in hybrid breeding. The anther culture is, at present, the only method of obtaining haploid plants and can be used effectively in various breeding programmes when it be successful in many cultivated crops.
