The inheritance mode of rice culm length was studied from the record of parents, F₁s, F₂s, BC₁F₁s and BC₁F₂s of three cross combinations between a Javanica tall variety and 3 short Korean varieties. The 3 short varieties are Tongil which has the IR8-height gene, Suwon 224 which is non-allelic to IR8-height gene and Waesung 5 which is non-allelic to both the IR8-height gene and to the Suwon 224 height gene but allelic to most of Japonica varieties. The results obtained would be summarized as follows: 1. The Javanica variety studied here, showed the segregation mode for culm length which is. non-allelic to IR8 and Suwon 224 but allelic to Waesung 5. 2. The segregation ratio of short to tail in the BC₁F₁generation which is crossed back to short parent showed 1 : 1 in both allelic and non-allelic crosses. 3. The efficiency of selection for plant type in the F₂generation was low and the variances for the plant height in the F₃generation were large. 4. Among the BC₂F₂lines which are grown out from the seeds selected randomly among the BC₁F₁plants, it was possible to discriminate between the tall and short. 5. The variances of BC₁F₂which was selected from short BC₁F₁were significantly less than those of selected from tall BC₁F₁. 6. The variances among/within BC₁F₂s were significantly larger than those of their parents.
