Histological Studies on the Microsporangial Development of x-ray Induced Male-sterile Plant of Radish

Genetical investigation of the x-ray-induced male-sterility of radish revealed that the male-sterility was controlled by the interaction of S cytoplasmic gene and homo recessive karyogene (msms) as was in the case of onion. In this paper the development of microsporangium of the male-sterile plant is dealt with. 1. The regularity of meiosis and formation of microspore was quite the same as that of male-fertile individual. 2. The initiation of microspore disintegration started earlier in the induced male-sterile plant as compared with that of spontaneous male-sterile individual. 3. The failure in the further development of microspore seemed to be caused by the hypertrophy of tapetum tissue of anther wall. 4. Hypertrophy of anther tapetum might be controlled by the interaction of cytoplasmic gene and karyogene.
