Embryological studies on Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense in Korea Ⅱ. The phenomenon of fertilization of Violet × Scarlet flower plant

The pollen tube elongation, the phenomenon of fertilization and cross-compatibility of violet flower plants crossed with scarlet ones in Rhododendron yedoense MAXIM. var. poukhanense NAKAI, were observed, and the results of which were summarized as follows. 1. The pollen tube penetrates into the stylar tissue at 3 hours after pollination and it reaches the microphyll at 24 hours. The primary endosperm nucleus is fertilized at 5 days after pollination and the egg cell is fertilized at 8 days. The pro-endosperm nucleus is divided at 10 days after pollination and the first division of fertilized egg takes place at 14 days. 2. The reciprocal crossing was carried out between scarlet flower plant and violet one. Scarlet × Violet was 17.3, and Violet × Scarlet was 29.4 in the percentage of seed formation.
