The efficiency of once or twice back-crosses to semi-dwarf parent were demonstrated by breeding semi-dwarf waxy lines from the crosses of five different waxy donor parents and a semi-dwarf non-waxy recurrent parent. These waxy lines were crossed to amylose restorer varieties which has low, medium and high amylose content each. Selecting non-waxy plants in their F₂, F₃ and F₄, and analysing amylose content of their harvested seeds, demonstrated the recovery of the same level amylose content as their amylose restorer parent. From the results, a schematic breeding procedure was formulated which utilizes a carrier waxy line and an amylose restorer line. This procedure is suggested to be called “Carrier technique” in rice breeding.
