Recent Advancement in Animal and Poultry Breeding

Recent researches in swine breeding were reviewed concerning possible use of halothane test for detecting Porcine Stress Syndrome, effectiveness of reciprocal recurrent selction, and combining ability of different breeds. Boar testing program was recently initiated in Korea, which may contribute to genetic improvement of swine. Due to certain defects of herdmate comparison in progeny testing of dairy bulls, a new procedure, Modified Contemporary Comparison Method, was recently implemented in the United States. A dairy cattle improvement scheme utilizing nucleus herd program proposed recently was reviewed. The crosses between Korean Native Cattle and certain other beef breeds had significantly higher average daily gain than the Korean Native Cattle, the cross with Chraolais having the highest growth rate. The development and improvement of male lines and female lines for producing commercial layers and broilers is an important characteristics of current poultry breeding. Genetic correlations between disease resistance and production traits in chicken were recently estimated by using one population exposed to disease agent for measuring disease resistance and another population related to the other for measuring production traits in a disease free environment.
