Responses of Soybean Varieties and Planting Dates to the Beanfly (Melanogromyza sp.) Damage

In order to obtain appropriate gene sources for resistance to beanfly and informations on cultural practice to avoid the beanfly damage, an investigation on responses of soybean varieties and planting dates to the beanfly damage was carried out. A total of 133 soybean cultivars were planted in 6 different planting dates from May to July. Beanfly damage was ranged from 5% to 85% in the Kumkok Experiment Farm depending upon the planting time and the damage was increased with delayed planting. No relationship was found between maturity group and beanfly damage, while varietal difference in the insect damage was significant at 1% level in the later planting population. The severe infestation caused significant reduction in plant height and the number of pods per plant.
