Feeding Values of Modified Opaque-2 Corn (Zea mays L.)

The modifier gene of opaque-2 gene was incorporated into seven normal synthetics widely grown in the Corn Belt in the U.S. The gene incorporation through backcross procedure was done in 1977 and two modified opaque-2 synthetics, Puyo II and III, were produced by open pollination of segregating modified opaque-2 kernels. The main purpose of the experiment was to determine the amino acid composition of the modified opaque-2 synthetics produced in 1979 and to find the nutritive values of the synthetics by feeding experiment with chicks. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Amino acid analysis revealed that the modified opaque-2 synthetics contained more lysine than normal corn. For instance, Puyo II contained 0.46% of lysine, while normal corn 0.31% on the dry weight basis. The content of histidine was also higher for the modified opaque-2 synthetics compared to the normal synthetics. 2. 35 days of feeding experiment shows that the modified opaque-2 synthetics were highly effective in increasing body weight of chicks as compared with normal com. Puyo II was superior to Puyo III for increasing body weight of chicks. 3. The superiority of Puyo II and III in nutritive values over the normal corn was also evident when the feeds were shifted from normal to modified opaque-2 and from modified opaque-2 to normal corn after 35 days of Experiment I. 4. Other plant characteristics of the modified opaque-2 synthetics were also investigated. great.
