To adopt the semi-dwarf character of barley cultivar ‘Golden Promise’, located at the subterminal region of the long arm of chromosome 3, as a marker gene, a linear discriminant function was derived from the seedling characters of cultivar ‘Golden Promise’ and ‘Bomi’, mother cultivar of induced mutants resistant to powdery mildew, and it was possible to make clear separation of both genotypes. In F₂- generation, one dominant gene controlling the seedling character of ‘Bomi’ was identified and the change of epistatic gene function between dominant resistance MI(La) gene and recessive resistance gene of Bomi-mutant ‘E 61’ was also observed. Recombination values calculated were 38% between powdery mildew resistance of ‘Bomi’ (Ml-(La)) and semi-dwarf character of ‘Golden Promise’ and 18% between powdery mildew resistant genes, E 53 and Ml-(La), respectively.
