The barley having accordion shaped spike was found at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1979. This barley was named by YBG-ACS₁ (Yeongnam barley gennplasm-accordion spike 1.) The rachis internode length of this barley was 15.1㎜ and the streched spike length 21.2㎝ which is 4.8times longer than that of Oweolbori. The ratio of spike length to culm length was 29.4 % of YBG-ACS₁ comparing to 5.1% of Oweolbori. In the F₂ population of YEG-ACS₁ and Oweolbori cross, the segregating ratio of accordion rachis type was 13:3 for normal straight rachis: accordion rachis which resulted by controlling of suppressor gene, however the spike type segregated by the ratio of 9:3:3:1 for lax-type: normal-type: accordion type: compact-type which resulted by controlling of two independent genes. Broad sense heritability estimates for spike length was very high in lax type and accordion-type, while it was very low for normal-type and compact-type. Correlation analysis among the agronomic characters, significant positive correlations were observed between the spikes per plant and kernels per spike, and 1000kernel weight: in lax-type of spike. From the above results, YBG-ACS₁ of barley was expected as a very good breeding material for short-culm, long spike and large kernel of barley.
