Studies on the Inheritance of Grain Characters of Rice

This study was performed to obtain the basic informations on the breeding for high yield rice variety by increasing grain weight. The 438 rice varieties and lines were used for the investigation of variation in grain weight. Parents, F₁ and F₂ generations of two crosses were used for the analysis of genetic parameters in some grain characters. Distribution of 1,000-grain weight of 438 varieties and lines was ranged from 9.7 to 42.3g. Grain weight was positively correlated with heading date and culm length, and negatively correlated with panicle length and spikelets per panicle. Frequency distribution of the grain characters in F₂ generations of the crosses which crossed between Gayabyeo and BG2, Yeongpungbyeo and TD58 showed continuous variation. Effective factors estimated in F₂ population of the two crosses were 3 to 10 for grain weight, 2 to 5 for grain width, 1 to 2 for grain thickness and 1 for grain length. The heritabilities in broad sense were high for grain weight(0.846-0.876), grain length(0,818-0.950), grain width(0.782-0.849) and grain thickness(0.799-0,753). In the analysis of selection parameters, high genetic advance with high heritability was observed in grain weight.
