Studies on Accelerating Generation Advancement in Wheat Breeding 2. Effect of Kinetin during Vernalization Period on the Shortening Days of Heading and Growth in Wheat

An addition of 20 to 80ppm kinetin during seed-green vernalization exhibited the shortened effect of cold treatment requirement and the effect of kinetin gradually improved as the concentration increased from 20 to 80 ppm, while above 100 ppm was harmful to wheat plant. By kinetin treatment, culm and spike length, spikelets, grains per spike and number of leaves on main stem were reduced. In addition, germination and seedling growth were also retarded by kinetin and these effects were more severe at high concentrations. The shortening effect on the days of heading by kinetin could not exceed that of complete seed-green vernalization.
