대학생들의 영어사교육 실태 및 인식 분석

A study of university students private English learning and their perceptions toward learning experience: with the special reference to Busan and Kyunganam regions

본 연구의 목적은 부산, 경남지역 대학생들의 영어사교육 실태와 인식을 분석함으로써 대학에서의 영어사교육 현황과 문제점을 살펴보고 이를 토대로 대학영어 교육의 개선을 도모하고자 하는데 있다. 부산, 경남지역 4곳의 대학생 438명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학생들의 영어사교육은 대학 공부의 시작과 함께 거의 동시에 이루어지고 있다. 이로 인해 영어사교육을 통한 영어공부가 학부 공부처럼 대학생활의 하나의 일상으로 자리 잡고 있는 모습이다. 둘째, 대학생활 내내 이루어지는 영어공부지만 부산, 경남지역에서의 영어사교육에 대한 효과는 공인영어성적 향상 외에는 미미하며 만족도도 그다지 높은 편이 아니다. 셋째, 대학생들은 1학년부터 영어공부에 신경을 쓰고 있기는 하지만 전공계열 별로 영어 공부의 양이나 주로 하는 영어공부의 내용에 있어서는 차이를 보이고 있다. 넷째, 대학생들의 영어사교육은 취업 때문이라는 이유가 큰 비중을 차지하고 있기는 하지만 한편으로 취업이 아니더라도 영어공부를 하겠다는 응답도 적지 않았다. 이는 대학생 들이 오늘날 영어의 중요성과 필요성에 대해 좀 더 폭 넓은 시선을 지니고 있는 것으로 생각된다. 이상의 결과를 통해 대학 영어 교육에서는 영어 공부에 대한 학생들 의 수요를 충족시킬 영어 수업의 양적인 확대와 계열별로 차별화된 영어수업의 내용, 영어에 대한 대학생들의 다양한 생각을 충족시킬 교육 과정 등을 적극적으로 모색할 필요가 있을 것이다.

The purpose of the present study is to examine the current status of university students private English learning and their perceptions toward their experiences. A total of 428 university students participated. The main findings are as follows. The students were experienced private English learning from the first year of their university. The main reason to take a private English class for the university students was to get a decent job in the labor market. Also, the students perceived that English is necessary for an integrative reason. The students satisfaction about private English learning was related to the outcome of score on the TOEIC test. The results revealed that the students had low satisfaction levels regarding the effects of English learning. Most students in this study responded that they spent too much time on studying English. The students felt stressful about studying English. There were statistically significant differences in private English learning related to gender, years of college, major, and parent s income. The results from the present study suggests more comprehensive considerations when taking into account designing English courses for university students. English education at university should be focused on the improvement of quality of education which can meet the student s needs, expectations, and goals.
