This study was carried out to examine the usefulness of differential varieties, used in IRRI and Japan, as a breeding material. Modes of inheritance of resistance were studied in F₁ and F₂ generations with domestic bacterial isolates(Pathogroup K1(Ⅰ)-JB8206 and 8004, Pathogroup K2(Ⅱ)-HB83216 and 8289, and Pathogroup K3(Ⅲ)-JN8041 and 8008). Reaction patterns of parental varieties to the three isolates JB8206, HB83216 and JN8041 were not affected by their growing stages during from maximum tillering to flowering. Modes of inheritance of resistance of Kogyoku to 8004, Ran-tai-emas to 8004(JB8206) and 8298(HB83216), Wase Aikoku 3 to 8004, 8298 and 8008, IR 20 to 8004, and IR 1545-339 to 8004, 8298 and 8008 agreed with the earlier reports. The resistance of DV 85 to JB8206, HB83216 and JN 8041 was inferred to be controlled by a single dominant gene. F₂ segregations for resistances to the isolates HB83216 and JN8041 in Mil. 23/IR20 cross resulted in continuous variations. Its broad-sense-heritabilities for resistance were 65.99% and 74.75% respectively, and there were high phenotypic(rp=0.781) and genotypic(rG(B)=0.937) correlation coefficients between the resistant reactions to the HB 83216 and to the JN 8041.
