For the development of new ginseng varieties, shortening of the breeding cycle is very important problem because one generation of ginseng takes too long, about 4 years. Therefore, this study was carried out to seek the possibility of cultivation of 3 times for 2 years in phytotron. 2-year-old seedlings of local variety(Violet-stem var.) and three pure lines materials were used, and determined the optimum time of low-temperature treatment, characteristics of sprout emergence and growth vigor in phytotron compared with field. New buds to be emerged next year were complely formed after5 months since the sprouts had emerged. Accordingly, the treatment of low-temperature at this time was not affect to emergence of ginseng sprouts of next cultivation. The growth vigor of 3,4-year-old ginseng cultivated in phytotron were poorer than those of field,respectively. Though the weakness of growth vigor in phytotron, period of one generation of ginseng could be shortened one year by the cultivation of 3 times for2 years.
