The glutinous rice Iri344 was crossed to the non-glutinous one IR50 and the F₁ was backcrossed to IR50. Thirteen homozygous glutinous individuals were selected from the BC₁F₂ of the above cross IR50//Iri344/IR50. From one line among the thirteen BC₁F₃ lines, the male sterile individuals were found and these were named as Line258ms. The F₁s of the crosses between the Line258ms and the homozygous fertile sister Line258,and between Line258ms and the normal variety Gayabyeo were fertile, and the F₂s of the above crosses showed the 3:1 ratios in fertility. Thus the male sterility of the mutant rice Line258ms appeared to be genic and to be controlled by a single recessive gene. The allelism test revealed that male sterility of Line258ms and that of IR36ms are governed by the same gene. The mean outcross rate of the Line258ms was 33.9% while that of Gayabyeo ms, which has the male sterility gene of IR36ms, was 11.5% and that of the cytoplasmic genetic male sterile rice Zhenshan97A was 18.0%.
