Studies on the fertilization and pro-embryo formation of male sterile carrot

Five carrot male Sterile lines and two normal lines were crossed to investigate the fertilizing phenomenon and pro-embryogenesis. The flowers pollinated were fixed in Carnoy’s liquid each hour, and were observed the process of change by paraffin section method. In normal lines, the pollens germinated on stigmatic tissue at 1.5 hours and penetrated into micropyle at 3 hours, and one male nucleus was fertilized with the polar nucli at 5 hours and other with the egg cell at 6-7 hours after pollination. In male sterile lines fertilizing times were the difference one another but were a little later than normal lines. MS 1697 BA and MS 2538 P were formed abnormal embryo sac, and the egg cells formed between inner and outer integument were fertilized, but those formed out of outer integument were not fertilized, sometimes, polar nucli were fertilized alone but embryos were not formed. The fertilizing percentages of normal lines were about 80%, but MS 1697 BA, MS 2538 P, MS 1635 BA, MS 2522 P, and MS 2556 P, were about 20, 10, 8, 8,2%.
