Strains of soybean mosaic virus causing soybean necrotic disease in Korea

Five strains of soybean mosaic virus SMV-G1, SMV-G2, SMV-G5, SMV-G6 and SMV-G7 were identified from 220 soybean leaf samples collected in Kyunggi, Chungnam, Kyungnam and Cheonnam provinces in Korea. The strains G5, G6, and G7 occupied 66% of all isolates tested, which can cause necrotic disease in some soybean cultivars such as Kwanggyo, Marshall, and Buffalo. Seed transmission was observed only from the seed samples grown in Kangweon province where the soybean mosaic virus disease occurred severely but no seed transmission from the seed samples grown in Cheonam and Kyungnam.
