Nature of gene action and inheritance of such characters as plant height, number of branches, first pod setting node, seed yield, and yield components in mungbean were determined in the F₂generations of 30 possible combinations of six-parent diallel cross. The F₂populations were grown under two different plantings, early and late, in the experimental field of Crop Experiment Station in 1984. General direction of dominance for the characters showed that tall plant height was dominant over short plant height, smaller seed over larger seed, and lower yield over higher yield. Degree of dominance for the plant height, 100 seed weight, and seed yield varied partial to over-dominance depending on the cross combinations. Direction of dominance for the number of pods per plant also varied with the different crosses. Combining ability analysis indicated that both additive and non-additive gene actions were involved in the first pod setting node and the number of seeds per pod, and that additive gene action was predominant in the plant height, 100-seed weight, and seed yield. Graphical analysis of diallel cross showed that additive gene action was predominant with partial dominance effect for lower 100-seed weight. Two smaller seed genotypes, V 3092 and V 1094, appeared to be dominant alleles, while two larger seed genotypes, V 3686 and VC 1973A, recessive alleles.
