To obtain the basic information for burley tobacco breeding, heterosis and inbreeding depression from a tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) hybridization study involving ten parents(nine burley and one Tobacco Introduction) and 45 each of F₁ and F₂ hybrids were estimated. This study was conducted at Jeonju Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute in 1985 following the cultural practices recommended for burley tobacco. On the average, the F₁ hybrids were taller, higher in midrib proportion and total alkaloid content, produced larger leaves, contained less total nitrogen and flowered earlier than the parents. Average heterosis of hybrids with L 8, as one parent, for yield and six other characters was significantly high. And that of LA Burley 21 and Aurelius for total alkaloid content, Va 509 for leaf width and TI 1068 for leaf width and internode length was also significantly high. A few hybrids surpassed the high parent in each character, but none of the hybrids were significantly better than high parent for all characters. With one generation of inbreeding, there was a shift toward later flowering and increasing in stalk height, leaf length, leaf width and internode length, but yield was not different.
