The influence of pollen dimorphism in rice anther culture was investigated from 15 crosses, japonica type F₁ generation, in winter of 1985. Pollen dimorphism could be observed plainly in size and staining reaction, and the number of the S pollen grains was the most at early stage 6, but the laggard and A type S pollen grains were partly developed into normal pollen grains just before flowering. The size of pollen grain was different by developmental stage and those of N and S pollen grains were 40 to 50μ and 30 to 40μ respectively just before flowering. The rate of callus formation was significantly increased according as the number of S pollen grains was grew up to 16%, and also the date of callus emergence from anther was faster, and it was especially related to B type S pollen. However the rate of callus formation in the anther donor with a lot of empty pollen grains was lower regardless of a number of S pollen grains. The correlation between S pollen grain rate and plant regeneration rate was not admitted.
