Studies on the cytoplasmic effects of advanced backcross populations of inter-generic hybrid between barley(H.vulgare L.) and wheat (T. aestivum L.)

Wheat-barley nucleo-cytoplasm hybrids, having barley cytoplasm was developed by three backcrosses of Chinese Spring to the inter-generic hybrid between barley, Manker 16, and wheat, Chinese Spring. Hybrids having wheat cytoplasm were higher in stem height, earlier in days to heading and showed more grains per spike than those having barley cytoplasm. Hybrids having barley cytoplasm showed thinner speltoid and oblong shaped spikes, while those having wheat cytoplasm showed oblong or clavate shaped spikes with much vigorous growth. Compared to the hybrids having wheat cytoplasm, those having barley cytoplasm were characterized to have long awns. Wheat hybrids having wheat cytoplasm showed relatively normal growth compared to those having barley cytoplasm.
